Social Groups

Where Kids Learn to Connect, Communicate, and Thrive

At OWL Pediatric Therapy, we know that social-emotional skills are just as important as academic skills. Many children, including those receiving speech therapy, occupational therapy, or support for social communication, benefit from extra opportunities to practice friendship skills, emotional regulation, and effective communication with their peers.

That’s why we offer small-group social skills programs designed to give children and teens a safe, structured, and encouraging space to connect, learn, and grow.

6-Week Social Skills Groups

Our 6-week social-emotional learning (SEL) groups meet for 50 minutes each week and focus on specific skills tailored to the group’s needs. Activities include visual supports, structured routines, guided practice, stories, role-playing, and interactive games.

In each group, children and adolescents have the opportunity to:

  • Build confidence in social interactions
  • Communicate more effectively with peers and adults
  • Manage emotions in group settings
  • Solve problems and navigate peer challenges
  • Strengthen empathy and understanding

Every session includes a brief period of unstructured time to mirror real-life situations like recess, lunch, or free play. During this time, our facilitator provides real-time coaching to help children apply their skills, build independence, and reduce anxiety in social situations.

Social-Emotional Learning Focus

Our groups are built around the five core SEL competencies from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL):

  1. Self-Awareness – Understanding thoughts, feelings, and strengths
  2. Self-Management – Managing emotions and behaviors
  3. Social Awareness – Showing empathy and understanding others
  4. Relationship Skills – Building and maintaining friendships
  5. Responsible Decision-Making – Making safe, respectful, and thoughtful choices

Topics we may cover include:

  • Foundational friendship skills
  • Prosocial behaviors
  • Emotion regulation and coping
  • Confidence and self-awareness
  • Problem-solving and peer conflict resolution
  • Mindfulness and self-regulation
Support for Parents & Caregivers

Support for Parents & Caregivers

We believe children grow best when caregivers are part of the process. We provide:

  • Parent coaching and education
  • Visual supports and social stories
  • Practical strategies to use at home and school
  • Community resource connections

Skill-Specific Workshops

Our half-day social-emotional workshops are often offered during school vacation weeks or holidays. These themed sessions give children the chance to explore and practice SEL skills through fun, creative, and collaborative activities.

Referrals and Custom Programs

We welcome referrals from families, schools, pediatricians, and therapists. If your child needs additional therapeutic, academic, or behavioral support, we can assist with referrals and care coordination. We also collaborate with educational and clinical teams to create custom social-emotional programs when needed.

Please note: OWL’s social-emotional programs are not diagnostic or clinical in nature, but they may complement your child’s current therapy plan or IEP/504 goals.
